# Adjusting the back length of a shirt

## The Ideal Shirt Length

The ideal shirt length depends on your body shape, your height and how you intend to wear your shirt.

| A **casual shirt**, worn untucked, should cover your stomach even when you raise your arms. It should not be too long either to avoid the "skirt effect". **On the side, it extends about 10 cm below the belt.** At the front, it reaches the middle of the fly. | A **formal shirt** must be long enough to stay tucked in when you move. **On the side, the shirt should extend about 17 cm below the belt.** At the back, the shirt should reach the base of the buttocks and at the front towards the bottom of the fly. |

![For a shirt of intermediate length, it is recommended to leave about 15 cm of fabric on the side relative to the belt.](https://storage.crisp.chat/users/helpdesk/website/-/2/1/5/d/215d429d5477cc00/shirt-length_ythvyl.jpg =500x350)

## LE CHEMISEUR® tips

### 🤏 Allow for shrinkage
We recommend washing your shirt two or three times before deciding whether any length adjustment is necessary.
Alternatively, you may choose to add 1 or 2 cm to the shirt length if you prefer a longer fit.
Our AI already takes the expected shrinkage of each fabric into account when calculating your measurements.

### 📏 Adjusting for height
Taller customers sometimes prefer a slightly longer shirt for more balanced proportions.
Shorter customers may prefer a slightly shorter shirt to maintain visual balance and avoid shortening the appearance of the legs.

### 🐘 Prominent stomach
If you usually wear your shirt tucked in, a slightly longer shirt can help it stay comfortably in place throughout the day.
For collar sizes of **48 cm and above**, you automatically benefit from our Big-&-Tall pattern, which provides additional length at the front for a given back length.

### 🔀 Back length and hip width link
![If you shorten the back, the hips sit higher and can usually be narrowed. Conversely, lengthening the back drops the hips lower and often means they should be widened.](https://lechemiseur.fr/data/lechemiseur/icones/sche-ma-ajustement-bassin-et-dos.png =600x226)
## How to measure back length on a shirt

![Measure the back length on a buttoned shirt laid flat, from the collar seam down to the hem.](https://lechemiseur.fr/data/lechemiseur/aide/DOS.jpg =800x533)
**Tolerance:** A difference of **±1 cm** between your measurement and your Clé de Coupe (Fit Key) is completely normal and falls within our manufacturing tolerances.
