Adjusting trouser hip width

You already own LE CHEMISEUR® trousers and would like to adjust the hip width? This page is for you.

Best practice

The hip measurement is the foundation for constructing a trouser pattern. It's the width at the widest area of the buttocks. The trousers should follow your seat lines without unsightly folds and stay comfortable even when seated.

When to adjust

🍑 Seat area is too tight

If the trousers feel tight when you sit, the front pockets gape, you can barely slide your hands into the pockets, and horizontal folds form at the crotch, feel free to add 2 cm to the hips width.

🩳 Seat area is too loose

If, on the contrary, the trousers are baggy and you can pinch 1 cm on each side and still sit comfortably, remove 2 cm to the hips width.

↕️ Shoud I adjust the rise height or the hips?

If the trousers are too tight or too loose at the buttocks, you should primarily adjust the hips width. Changing the rise regulates excess fabric below the seat, and/or the waistband position on the body.

🔁 Adjusting the waist together with the hips

If you adjust the hips after losing or gaining weight, you generally need to adjust the waist by the same amount.

What hips width corresponds to on trousers

Lay the trousers flat with the button closed and measure the width from the left edge to the right edge, passing through the lowest point of the fly on the front.

The seat is difficult to measure on a finished pair of trousers because it is a 3-D shape.

What seat width corresponds to on the body

If you need to check the seat width on your body, measure around the widest part of the buttocks without tightening. Divide by two and add 1 cm of ease to the half-circumference so you can move and sit comfortably.
