Best practice

The top of the sleeve should meet the tip of the shoulder bone. Correct shoulder placement keeps the armhole smooth while preserving enough freedom of movement.

When to adjust

🏋 Broad or very narrow build

Add + 1 cm for extra room or remove – 1 cm for a tidier line.

⚖ High or sloping shoulders

High, horizontal shoulders: subtract – 1 cm.
Sloping shoulders: add + 1 cm to the shoulder width (and add the same + 1 cm to the armhole height).

📏 Effect on sleeve length

Changing the shoulder width shifts the sleeve length by the same amount. If you widen the shoulder by 1 cm, shorten the sleeves by 1 cm—and vice-versa.

Compare with a shirt you already own

Measure along the seam from the sleeve head to the collar seam.

Ready-to-wear shirts are often cut overly wide in the shoulder so they can fit as many body shapes as possible.
